What to know before cataract surgery

From referral to follow up, the steps in plain words.

Dr. Walter Liao, ophthalmologist, at Claye Vision & Surgery

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside the eye. It usually develops slowly, and many people first notice glare at night, faded colours or needing more light to read.

OHIP covered cataract surgery starts with a referral from your optometrist or family doctor. At your consultation, Dr. Liao examines your eyes and takes detailed measurements, which guide the choice of lens placed during surgery.

There are different lens options, from standard lenses to ones that cover more of your range of vision. Dr. Liao will talk you through what each means for your daily life before you decide.

Follow up visits happen in the same clinic, with the same team, so you always know who to ask.
